Prokon secures 130 MW power purchase agreement with Google in Finland

• Prokon has developed a new wind farm in Finnish Mutkalampi with a capacity of up to 250 MW

• Prokon has closed a sale of an 80% share of the ownership in the wind farm to Neoen

• Prokon and Neoen, through their Mutkalampi wind farm joint venture, has entered into a 130 MW power purchase agreement (PPA) with Google

Itzehoe. Over the past weeks, Prokon, together with its project partner Neoen, finalized its second power purchase agreement (PPA) with US technology giant Google. 130 megawatt (MW) of an expected total of app. 250 MW produced by a new wind farm near Mutkalampi, in Central and Northern Ostrobothnia, western Finland, will be providing Google’s facilities with renewable energy from 2022 onwards. Construction will begin in early 2021 with commissioning expected by the end of the year thereafter.

Prokon’s Finnish branch planned and developed the new wind farm over the last years. Subsequently, an ownership share of 80 percent of this project was sold to partner Neoen, the leading independent producer of exclusively green energy in France.

This is already the second project of its kind for Prokon and Neoen. The first wind farm in Hedet, with a capacity of 81 MW, is due to be fully operational in early 2020 and will deliver all of its produced electricity to Google in a similar agreement signed last year.

“A project of this scale which qualifies for a power purchase agreement with a company like Google is a huge accomplishment for our organization“, states Prokon Board Member Dr. Henning von Stechow, “Securing a second PPA confirms that this way of realizing projects can be a viable alternative to public subsidies. Throughout this process, Neoen has once again proven to be a trustworthy and highly-qualified partner and we look forward to our future cooperation.“

Prokon’s engagement in Finland remains an ever-growing part of the Prokon organization. Other projects in Finland currently under development are advancing steadily and will be ready for construction in the coming years. While the majority of Prokon’s business activities focus on the German market, this progress underlines the importance of their relations and connections to the European wind industry.
